Mr Vivian McIver CBE, FRSA

Vivian McIver taught in Portadown College from 1967 – 1977, initially as a history teacher.  Whenever Mr McCormick left he was promoted to be Head of the History Department.  He was known by staff and pupils to be an extremely well prepared and dedicated teacher. He was sadly missed when he left the school to work in the Department of Education Northern Ireland (DENI).

After leaving the College he was appointed to the Northern Ireland Education & Training Inspectorate. He is fondly remembered by those in the teaching profession, as the Assistant Chief Inspector of schools for Northern Ireland from 2000 to 2005.

His services to education were officially recognised when he was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours List of 2005. Vivian was previously elected a Member of the Athenaeum in London and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA).

In 2005 after 27 years of distinguished service within DENI he retired and began a new career as an Education and Training Consultant. As a consultant, he has advised on the reforms of teacher education all over the world. He has extensive experience of working internationally in countries undertaking the evaluation and reform of aspects of their education systems or introducing major educational projects.

He has worked in the Republic of Ireland, USA, Belgium, Israel, Spain, Canada, Greece, China, and Republic of Macedonia. Recently, Vivian has worked in countries emerging from conflict most recently in Georgia and Afghanistan, and earlier in South Africa.
